Frequently Asked Questions for Students - Camden Campus

Why is Rutgers replacing the current student ID number with the RU-ID?

The social security number is used as the record number for many sensitive pieces of personal information including financial, medical and academic records. This and the growth in the crime of identity theft have raised concerns about the easy availability and non-essential use of social security numbers.

In response to those concerns, the State of New Jersey has recently adopted legislation that will prohibit the display of social security numbers on class rosters and other similar documents. By converting the student identification number to the new RUID, Rutgers will not only respond to the requirements of the state legislation, it will also substantially reduce the use and availability of student social security numbers within the University and enhance student privacy.

How do students obtain their new RU-ID number?

Beginning, February 13, 2006, students can look-up their new RUID via the online look-up using netID; log-on to "My Rutgers" at https://my.rutgers.edu/profile or contact the Camden registrar at (856)-225-6053.

What will happen to the student ID card?

The current ID cards are encoded with your social security number. In order to enhance the safety of the card, it is necessary to reclaim and properly dispose of the current ID cards.

Students on all Rutgers campuses will be issued a new student ID card. Your new RUID will both be printed on the new card and encoded in the magnetic strip. The RUID replaces the SSN as your primary identifier at Rutgers.

How will I obtain my new ID card?

1) Students will come to the Rutgers-Camden IMPACT Booth to exchange their current ID card for a new card. The IMPACT Booth is located in the main lobby of the Camden Campus Center.

2) For security reasons, students must turn in their current student ID card to obtain a new card at no cost; otherwise a $15 replacement fee will apply. If you are new to campus and were never issued a student ID card, no fee is charged for the first issue of the card.

3) The changeover dates are tentatively scheduled as follows and are subject to change:

March 20-24, 2006 - Residents, Camden Cash, Student Employees
After March 27, 2006 - All other students

The IMPACT Booth will offer extended operating hours during this period to better accommodate students.

4) Resident students with meal plans, students with Camden Cash and student employees are given priority for issuance due to their expanded use of their ID card.

5) Students will not be able to obtain a new student ID card until the designated pick-up dates listed above.

6) Students' current student ID card will continue to work in card swipes until they pick-up their new student ID card; however, all old cards will be "turned off" on or about Commencement 2006. Accordingly, students must obtain their new student ID card before the end of the Spring 2006 semester to be sure to have a working ID card.

I am a resident student, a student with Camden Cash or a student employee in Camden. Why am I considered a priority to receive my new ID?

For these students, the student ID card serves multiple purposes. For residents, the card is used to access the residence halls, use meal plans, use laundry & vending machines, attend student activities programs and events.

Camden Cash participants have discretionary funds applied to their ID card for use at select retail locations on campus. Student employees use their ID card for campus time clocks.

Some students will be away from campus during the spring term. How will they obtain their new RU-ID and new student ID card?

Students away from campus will be able to obtain their new RUID in the same way as student's on-campus. They can look-up their new RUID via the online look-up using netID; log-on to "My Rutgers" at https://my.rutgers.edu/profile or contact the Camden registrar at (856)-225-6053.

Replacement student ID cards will have to be obtained when they first return to campus by visiting the IMPACT Booth.

I am a commuter student at Rutgers-Camden. I don't have a meal plan, Camden Cash or door access issues. Why should I care about getting a new ID card?

Since your social security number is encoded on your ID card, the security of your personal information is in jeopardy if your card is lost or stolen. In order to enhance your privacy, Rutgers will collect all ID cards, and properly dispose of the card, by cross shredding and incineration.

Additionally, the current ID cards will not be accepted as an official Rutgers ID card by all University departments after commencement 2006.

I am a graduating senior, why should I care about getting a new ID card?

Since your social security number is encoded on your ID card, the security of your personal information is in jeopardy if your card is lost or stolen. In order to enhance your privacy, Rutgers will collect all ID cards, and properly dispose of the card, by cross shredding and incinerating the cards.

Also, graduates will still need the new ID card to attend programs and gain access to campus facilities after graduating.

Finally, you graduate from Rutgers with a brand new, safe and secure student ID card.
