Open Forum to Discuss Sexual Violence On Campus

The forum has started, and registration for the forum has closed.

In response to the recent disclosures around sexual violence at Rutgers University on various social media outlets, we would like to host a listening session. We invite you to speak directly to leadership within Student Affairs, the Office of Compliance and Title IX, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, and the Office for Violence Prevention and Victim Assistance (VPVA) to express your questions, concerns, and expectations.

Goals for the Open Forum:

  • To hear what students have to say.  We want to listen to you and better understand what your expectations are for Rutgers University.
  • To share information, resources, and support.  We want to answer your questions provide you with the scope of what we can do as well as the limitations of our work.  We also want to let you know all of the resources and support available.
  • To help students heal.  We want to inform you about some of the things we’ve been doing to address your concerns. We also want to hear from you about what you want to see next.

Individuals who join the forum will have the option to join anonymously or share their name, as well as voice their feedback via chat or audio. We will also have VPVA advocates available during the forum for participants to speak with.

Please note: This forum is a public awareness event aligned with the University’s support of education and prevention efforts regarding sexual misconduct. Any disclosure at this event of incidents or behaviors prohibited by the University’s Student Policy Prohibiting Sexual Harassment, Sexual Violence, Relationship Violence, Stalking and Related Misconduct (University Policy 10.3.12) will not be considered a report to the University under the policy.

The Office of Compliance and Title IX is NOT obligated to investigate any disclosure made during the forum. The event will also NOT be recorded by Student Affairs for privacy reasons. Click here for the Sexual Violence Reporting Form.

Guidelines for Access Advocates

The experience of sexual violence and subsequent conversations can be really difficult. If you find yourself wanting to talk to someone about how you’re feeling or figuring out what options you have, you can speak to one of our VPVA Advocates.

Here are a few options for you:

  • During the forum, if you wanted to chat with a VPVA Advocate, you can message one privately through the WebEx chat feature. Advocates will be clearly identified so you know who to message.
  • During the forum, if you wanted to speak with someone on the phone, you could do that two ways:
    • Call our 24/7 hotline, 848-932-1811. You’ll be connected with an answering service, who will give your number to our advocate to call you back on a blocked number.
    • Send a private chat message including your phone number to one of our advocates who will call you from a blocked number.
  • After the forum, we’ll have a Virtual Healing Space where survivors can process along with other survivors and advocates.

Your registration information will be kept private. The Open Forum is for the Rutgers community: only individuals with addresses will be allowed to register. If you have specific circumstances that prevent you from using a email, the registration form will allow provides the option to share that information.
