Suzzanne Douglas is an award-winning actress whose work has taken her from stage to screen. Look for Suzzanne in Five, the Netflix limited series directed by Ava DuVernay and the feature film Really Love in theaters later this year.
On television she has appeared in numerous programs but Suzzanne is best known for her co-starring role with Robert Townsend in the long-running Warner Brothers sitcom, Parent ‘Hood. Suzzanne received an NAACP nomination for her portrayal of Mother in the made for TV movie Sounder and she appeared as Cissy Houston in the Lifetime biopic, Whitney. Some of her other TV credits include Bull, The Good Wife, Bones, Law and Order Criminal Intent/SVU, The Parkers, NYPD Blue, Promised Land and Touched by an Angel.
On the big screen, Ms. Douglas can be seen in How Stella Got Her Groove Back, School of Rock, Jason’s Lyric, The Inkwell, Tap (NAACP Image Award) and the short film Black N’ Blue which screened at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Suzzanne, also a musician, provided the title song for the mockumentary film Happy Yummy Chicken. As a producer Ms. Douglas’ The Last Weekend won Best Short at the 1998 Pan African Film Festival.
On stage she created the role of Kendra in American Son at George Street Playhouse. She appeared as the role of Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street at Chicago’s Drury Lane Theater. At Baltimore’s Center Stage Theater she performed the role of the Marquise in Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
On Broadway Ms. Douglas appeared as Jenny Diver in The Threepenny Opera opposite Sting. In The Tap Dance Kid she played Savion Glover’s mother long before they would team up again in the feature film Tap with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis, Jr. Other theater credits include Henry V, Wit, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, Sophisticated Ladies, Gypsy, Ruddigore, Cabaret, Night in Tunisia, Julius by Design, The Drowning Crow, Crowns, Jar the Floor, Women of Brewster Place and Arthur Laurent’s, Hallelujah, Baby!, which Laurent’s re-wrote especially for Suzzanne.
