A New Tool for Our Culture of Civil Discourse
November 4, 2024
Dear Scarlet Knights,
Your semester on the Banks has, no doubt, been full of reflection and self-discovery—and the opportunity to express your own viewpoints while learning about the views of others, including those with whom you may strongly disagree.
That respectful exchange of ideas is an invaluable part of the university experience, especially at a place as intellectually and experientially diverse as Rutgers–New Brunswick. As Chancellor Conway shared at the beginning of the semester, this is the Rutgers Way: We value each community member’s unique perspectives, which enrich our campus culture.
To support our culture of free speech and academic freedom, the Division of Student Affairs has launched a Civil Discourse learning module that can be completed in less than 10 minutes on your mobile device or computer.
It will provide the tools to help you recognize the difference between opinions and prejudices, approach discussions with an open mind, and thoughtfully listen without reacting or dismissing others. You'll also explore the line between free speech and speech that crosses into threats, harassment, or incitement to violence.
The module at go.rutgers.edu/civil_discourse is part of Rutgers–New Brunswick’s Caring for Our Community campaign of resources and strategies for creating a resilient, responsive, engaged, and informed community.
Let’s continue to foster a campus environment where respectful dialogue, empathy, and collaboration lead the way forward. These skills and values will serve you throughout your time at Rutgers and beyond.
In Rutgers Pride,
Salvador B. Mena, Ph.D. (he, him, el)
Senior Vice Chancellor for the Student Experience
