Healthy Habits for a Better Knight

At Rutgers, being a Scarlet Knight means showing up for yourself and for each other. Healthy Habits for a Better Knight is built around one simple idea: wellness looks different for everyone, and every Knight deserves the tools, resources, and community to find what works for them.

Move

Whether you’re lifting for the first time, trying a new class format, or just want a low-pressure way to build a routine, Rutgers Recreation has an entry point for every level – drop-in group fitness, personal training, strength-training basics, and body-composition assessments to help you see your progress. Most programs are free, and no experience is required.

Eat Well

From balanced options in the dining halls to fresh, local produce right on campus, Rutgers makes it easier to fuel your body well. Small changes to how you eat can make a real difference in how you feel day to day.

Mental Health

Your mental health matters as much as your physical health, and asking for support is a strength, not a setback. Confidential counseling, peer support, and skill-building programs are here to help you manage stress, recognize warning signs in yourself or a friend, and know exactly where to turn when things feel like too much.

Rutgers students also have free, immediate access to teletherapy through UWill. UWill allows you to confidentially meet with a therapist who fits your preferences and schedule.

Stay Safe

Staying safe covers more ground than it sounds – physical safety, healthy safety, and community safety all count. From learning practical self-defense skills to staying current on immunizations to standing with survivors of violence, knowing your resources is part of staying safe.

Rest

Rest isn’t a reward for finishing everything else on your list; it’s part of how your body and mind actually function. Prioritizing sleep and downtime is one of the simplest, most overlooked healthy habits you can build.
